What is Silk Road?

The Silk Road was a crucial path of trade that allowed Chinese silk to be transported to the Western world. The Silk Road in Pakistan started from the Chinese city of Kashgar, passed through the Khunjerab Pass (the highest paved international border crossing in the world), and then continued through the cities of Gilgit, Hunza, Skardu, and Shigar before reaching the Indian subcontinent.

The Karakoram Highway

The Karakoram Highway (KKH) follows one of the principal Silk Road routes. The Karakoram Highway, also known by its initials KKH, is a 1,300 km (810 mi) national highway that runs from the Pakistani province of Punjab’s Hasan Abdal to the Khunjerab Pass in Gilgit-Baltistan. The highway connects Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan to China’s Xinjiang Uyghur region. KKH is a popular tourist destination, but it is also one of the highest paved roads in the world, with a maximum elevation of 4,714 m (15,466 ft) passing through the Karakoram Mountain range. Due to its remarkable elevation and the arduous conditions under which it was constructed, it is often referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World.
